Rescued Beagles

Adoption procedures are beginning for the 2,400 dogs destined for scientific experimentation rescued from the controversial Green Hill breeding facilities in northern Italy, said ex-tourism minister Maria Vittoria Brambilla. The announcement was made together with Italy's State Forest Police, who said that 50% of the confiscated beagles are 3-8 months old and many are pregnant adult females who were used as breeders.

The dogs were seized during inspections last week in preparation for the closure of a center owned by the multinational firm Marshall Farms. Police said that three managers at the facility are under investigation for animal cruelty following inspections.

"The closing and subsequent legal procedures are history-making for animal rights," said Brambilla. The Italian animal rights association LAV and environmental advocacy group Legambiente will assist with placing the dogs in homes.
