Young Drinkers

Italy's alcohol consumption has fallen in the past 20 years but young people are drinking more, according to statistics released by the think-tank Censis. Censis research found that self-control among the young has "weakened" while the overall number of moderate drinkers has increased.

Earlier this year a report to parliament found binge-drinking among young people had dropped 5.4%. But the number of youngsters who said they had drunk alcohol in the previous year was still high. The report found that teen drinking was still "often" accompanied by the use of drugs, most commonly cannabis.

Alcohol use by teens has been a rising cause of concern among Italian authorities and cases of binge-drinking have claimed mounting headlines. The media regularly reports on the high number of alcohol and drug-related road accidents on the way back from discos, so-called 'Saturday Night Massacres'.
