Deadly Trap

A suspected thief was shot dead by a rifle whose trigger was attached by wire to the door of a farm in the countryside around Palermo. Luigi D`Aniello, 31, was found dead by two suspected accomplices who police said were trying to force their way into the back of the farm when they heard the shotgun blast at the front.

The unidentified farmer, who may be prosecuted, said he set up the booby-trap because he was afraid of being robbed. The two alleged accomplices, who reported the incident to the police, are being questioned on suspicion of armed robbery.

D`Aniello was hit in the chest by the blast after pushing open the door and died immediately, police said.
