barking dog

Italian News - August 12

Dogs have the "existential right" to bark their muzzles off, according to a northern Italian justice of the peace. Justice Clemente Ravetto said this was his reason for overruling a claim by a pensioner from Rovereto for damages against a neighbour whose two Dobermans bark all day and night.

Instead of getting compensation, the pensioner was told he must put up with the noise and pay the court costs. "I'm so disappointed with this sentence that I'm not even going to appeal," he said. "The moral of the story seems to be that if your neighbour's dog ruins your life, then that's your business".

Ravetto, apparently an animal lover, also barred the dogs' owner from using a special collar - which gives off high-frequency sounds when the animals bark - to keep them quiet.
