Fiumicino airport

Italian News - August 14

Petty thieves, phony taxi drivers and drug smugglers have had a tough time since Italian police stepped up sweeps through Rome's Fiumicino airport following the July terrorist attacks in London and Sharm el-Sheikh.

More than 16,000 people have been checked and identified by police during their 'Safe Summer' operation, which has lead to the arrest of 23 people, including drug and human traffickers and thieves.

Police have also fined 180 illegal taxi drivers and have brought charges against 75 people for a series of crimes, including possession of a gun without a permit.
