Richard Gere

Just a Job

Hollywood star Richard Gere was welcomed by Rome's Mayor Gianni Alemanno a day before the actor is due to receive a lifetime achievement award at the International Rome Film Festival. The 62-year-old actor, who is a politically active Buddhist, discussed his support for Tibet and the Dalai Lama in a one-hour meeting at the Campidoglio, Rome's town hall. Alemanno presented the actor with a small statue of a wolf, symbol of the Italian capital, and the American actor thanked the mayor for his support for Tibet.

Gere, best known for roles in films including American Gigolo and Pretty Woman, will be presented with the Marc' Aurelio Award at the sixth annual film festival. The actor said he had made his first film when he was 26 and he had always considered acting a job and that had been reinforced in recent years.
