Two Rivers on Ebay

A giant bronze sculpture donated to the city of Florence could wind up on Ebay, a city official said. Two Rivers by American sculptor Greg Wyatt is currently on show outside Florence`s town hall, the Palazzo Vecchio, the site of an exhibition of Wyatt`s works. It was originally intended to remain there until October 24 before moving to its permanent home in a piazza across the Arno River to join works by young artists from Florence and New York.

But those arrangements were made by Florence`s former cultural authorities, who stepped down in June after the city elections. The city`s new culture czar, Giuliano Da Empoli, said that after the sculpture`s time expired outside the Palazzo Vecchio, it was headed for storage. ``One day, we might even auction it on Ebay,`` Da Empoli told reporters. Da Empoli, who made no attempt to hide his disliking for the mammoth bronze, said that in the future, the city would only accept art donations deemed suitable for the spaces available.

Forged in the Coubertin Art Foundry near Paris, Two Rivers stands at nearly five metres high (16 feet). It arrived in Florence to a gala unveiling ceremony to inaugurate an exhibition of Wyatt`s sculptures in the medieval Palazzo Vecchio. According to Wyatt, the sculpture represents the creative forces linking the Arno River in Tuscany with the Hudson River in New York.
