Safe but Expensive

Safe sex costs more in Italy than in any other country in the world, according to a condom price comparison published in the London edition of the free newspaper Metro. Italians pay an average 14 euros for a box of ten condoms, more than twice as much as the European Union average.

Condom prices in Ireland came in a distant second at ten euros per pack, ahead of Germany where they averaged nine euros. Though it has a higher cost of living than many other European countries, the UK boasted condoms six to seven euros cheaper than in Italy.

According to the study, residents of the Indian megalopolis of Mumbai enjoy the world's cheapest condoms, running at less than 1.50 euros for a box of ten. The prophylactic price index was tabulated by Swedish consumer watchdog Pricerunner for World AIDS Day on December 1.
