Italian women lead one out of three agricultural firms in the country, a study by farmers' union Coldiretti revealed. According to the report, women run nearly 260,000 agricultural business in Italy, the second leading sector for female business owners behind commercial services.

Over one in five women entrepreneurs work in the agriculture sector, added the organization which said the number is bound to increase. According to the report, nearly half of all agricultural students in Italy are women with female enrollment up by 20% over the last eight years.

The study also showed women leading the way in promoting typical Italian products like oil and wine for foreign markets, and in pioneering new services like day camps for children and drug rehabilitation programmes based on farm work. Women have also been particularly successful in developing the growing new farm holidays market, which has seen the conversion of some 18,000 farms around the country for tourism.
