Save the Chicks

An Italian court has cleared a northern Italian jeweller of animal cruelty charges after he put a hen and chicks in his shop window.

The court quashed a fine imposed last year when an animal rights activist complained that the birds were hemmed in, subjected to constant stress by window tappers and unable to sleep because of the display's bright lighting.

But the judge decided the animals, which have since been returned to a local farm, had enough room to move and weren't worse off than battery chickens. He ruled the 'Golden Eggs' promotion had caused them no lasting harm.
