Fake Blind

A southern Italian man who got a job thanks to a fake certificate of blindness has been unmasked after 24 years. The 45-year-old, hired as switchboard operator at Taranto jail in 1984, only recently came under suspicion after an anonymous tip-off. Police found he had a driving license and recently bought a powerful motorbike.

They put a hidden camera on his work station and spotted him reading the paper - on one occasion peering over an article entitled Eyes, Right! The man has been charged with defrauding the state. The doctor who certified his blindness will not be prosecuted because too much time has passed since the offence.
