Painted Labels

Yoko Ono has become the latest artist to be enrolled by the Fattoria Nittardi vineyard to design a label for a limited edition of its Chianti Classico Casanova wine. The vineyard is owned by German art gallery manager Peter Fenfert who since buying Fattoria Nattarti in 1982 has every year had a renowned artist design a label for a limited edition of his Chianti Classico.

The label designed by Ono, the 74-year-old widow of Beatle John Lennon, is the first to be produced in multiple colors and it will be placed on 3,000 bottles of 2005 Chianti Classic Casanova. The special edition with Ono's artwork celebrates the 25th anniversary of Fenfert buying the Tuscan vineyard. Other artists who have lent their talents to Fattoria Nittardi include A.K. Penck of Germany, Poland's Igor Mitoraj and local Chianti artist Giuliano Ghelli. Aside from the label, the artists are also asked to design the special silk paper in which the bottles are individually wrapped.

Fattoria Nittardi is located in the heart of Tuscany between Florence and Siena. It was was once a fortified tower that was first mentioned in the 12th century as "Nectar Dei", the nectar of the gods. In the 16th century this spacious estate was the property of Michelangelo Buonarroti, who planted his own vineyard and offered the Pope his wine as "genuine gift".
