No More Free Flights

From now on journalists and members of the media flying aboard the state flights of political authorities will have to buy a ticket, according to an executive ordered signed by Premier Romano Prodi. Round trip domestic flights with government and state officials will cost 300 euros, flights in Europe and the Mediterranean region will run 600 euros, while all other international flights will cost 900 euros.

The price of the plane ticket will be half should the members of the press fly only one way, the order added. The move was defined as a cost-cutting measure to reduce expenses related to government activities. After observing how members of the press are not part of official state delegations, the letter pointed out that bigger planes and ground transport are often needed to accommodate the press accompanying state officials.
