Summer holidays end this week for some eight million Italian students with schools opening their doors on different days depending on the region. Today schools are opening in the regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lombardy Piedmont, Veneto, Molise and the autonomous province of Bolzano.

Students will be back at their desks Tuesday in Abruzzo and Wednesday Trento, while on Thursday schools open in Basilicata, Lazio, Liguria, Marche, Sardinia, Tuscany, Umbria and Velle d'Aosta. School will not re-open until next Monday in Calabria, Campania and Puglia and the last schools to open will be lower schools in Emilia Romagna, next Tuesday.

Head of State Giorgio Napolitano will officially open the school year September 18 with a traditional ceremony which this year will be staged in the courtyard of the presidential Quirinale Palace in Rome. Education Minister Giuseppe Fioroni has promised to make unexpected visit to schools through out Italy throughout the week in order to bring his best wishes to students.
