Italian News - October 13

Italy's first 'air guitar' championship will be staged in Milan on October 25 at the Tunnel rock club.

Air guitar involves pretending to play an imaginary guitar, usually to a heavy metal song, which includes not only the exaggerated strumming the instrument but also performing the physical stage movements and often lip-synching the words in playback.

Contestants will be judged on their technique, creativity, clothing and sheer courage in performing. The jury at the Tunnel club will include Shel Shapiro, whose group The Rokes was popular in Italy in the '60s with Italian language covers of British and American rock hits, and Italian singer-satirist Davide Rondino.

The winner of the contest will receive a real guitar, a Fender Stratocaster Original, while those who place second to fifth will automatically qualify for the national finals next July. It is the intent of organizers to hold Air Guitar Unplugged contests every three months ahead of the finals.

Entry in the contest is free and applications are accepted through the website: http://www.unpluggedairguitar.com
