Italian News - May 13

A group of 150 juvenile delinquents will soon be sent out to sea to learn a seafaring trade as part of a justice ministry rehabilitation project. The youths, aged between 14 and 18, will ship out on fishing boats and passenger ferries and organizers hope the prospect of a career at sea will help them mend their ways.

"It is our hope to offer these difficult kids a future. Of course, it will be up to them to make the most of this opportunity," explained Serenella Pesarin, general manager at the justice ministry. "At first we will be taking youths from the regions of Sicily, Liguria, Abruzzo, Marche, Calabria and Puglia, but we hope to soon expand the initiatives on a national level."

"Life at sea will be a real lesson in life. It will teach them the importance of following the rules as well as offering economic compensation," the ministry official added. Each participant will go through a training course before being shipped out to sea and their progress will be monitored by representatives from both the ports authority and their parole board.
