silver bowl from Pompeii

Italian News - March 31

The opulence of Roman banqueting is recreated in a new show in Naples which brings together for the first time all the silverware unearthed at Pompeii. "Pompeii has been an extraordinary treasure trove of silver and even gold cutlery and other banqueting objects," said the chief curator of the show, Pompeii's Archaeological Superintendent Pietro Giovanni Guzzo. "It has been estimated that at least half of all the Roman silverware discovered over the past few centuries comes from Pompeii".

The show presents four major collections of banqueting finery and also documents the history of lesser finds in various Pompeii dwellings including the House of the Faun, the House of the Epigrams and the houses of a string of Roman nobles.

Silver In Pompeii opens on Sunday at the Museo Nazionale Archeologico in Naples and runs until September 11.
