Giovanna Mezzogiorno

Italian News / Movies - April 26

Giovanna Mezzogiorno, who starred in Italian foreign-language Oscar nominee "Don't Tell," will join Spanish actor Javier Bardem in "Love in the Time of Cholera," a project based on the novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Mike Newell is directing the film, which New Line Cinema will release domestically. The film, budgeted at $35 million-$40 million, is set to begin production in Brazil on August 15.

"Cholera" tells the story of an unrequited love that spans more than 50 years in turn-of-the-century South America where two lovers (Bardem and Mezzogiorno) wait out careers, marriages, affairs and deaths until they can reunite. Ron Harwood ("The Pianist") adapted the screenplay.

Mezzogiorno's credits also include "Facing Windows," for which she received the David di Donatello Award (Italy's equivalent of the Oscar) for best actress, as well as "Virginia" and "The Last Kiss." Bardem received an Oscar nomination in 2001 for "Before Night Falls."
