From next month Roman school children who dare to skip classes could find it much harder to pull the wool over their parents' eyes. Under a new initiative being tried out in a western district of the city, the parents of kids who go missing will automatically receive an SMS message alerting them to possible truancy.
The service is one of a series being offered by an Internet portal set up to provide an efficient channel of communication between the district's 26 schools and parents. "It will be an essential instrument for bringing together teachers, students and parents in a school system which is more attentive and more modern," district chief Davide Bordoni said.
The experiment will start on October 1 and continue till the end of the year. Only parents who express the wish to be contacted will be contacted.
