French actress Carole Bouquet says she left actor companion Gerard Depardieu because, among other things, he never shared her love of Italy. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the Bouquet said the couple's wine-making business on the southern Italian island of Pantelleria had always been her passion, not his.
"Gerard never really loved that place. He loves Normandy, the fog and the rain," she said in interview to be published this week. "But for me the Mediterranean sun is a sort of therapy. When I'm feeling down I go to Italy and rebuild myself. This is one of the reasons why I left Gerard, because he doesn't love Italy enough."
The end of the 48-year-old star's nine-year relationship with Depardieu recently became public after she was snapped by paparazzi as she kissed her new companion on Pantelleria. She and her husband bought a vineyard on the island several years ago and began producing their own brand of the local dessert wine known as 'passito'.
Although Depardieu, who comes from a winemaking family, is said to have become a connoisseur of the wine during his time on the island, Bouquet said he had been happy to let her have the property after they split. "It's all mine, as is the passito I produce there," she said.
