Jewels worth about 10,000 Euro ($16,500) were stolen from the desecrated grave of a woman in north-western Italy who had been dead for 15 years. The desecration took place in a small village near the city of Turin.

A woman from the village, who was visiting the Great Paradise cemetery, discovered the tombstone knocked down, the coffin open and the burial shroud cut away. The thieves took the rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings the deceased was buried with.

Her husband, Mario Faletti, a jeweler, had insisted that his wife be buried with her jewels "because she loved being elegant and surrounded with beautiful objects", he said. "I would never have thought that someone could do such a thing to get hold of a little gold."

Italian authorities have opened an investigation into the theft and desecration.
