Underwater kissing contests, aerobic dances inspired by Bollywood movies and buttocks-toning treadmills to make Jennifer Lopez envious. These are just some of the highlights of the 17th Rimini Fitness Festival, which opened on Saturday in Italy's Adriatic riviera.
First established in 1989, the festival has grown into one of the most important of its kind. This year's edition, which runs until June 5th, is expected to attract as many as 500 000 people to the seaside resort of Rimini. Not just fitness freaks, but also important players from Europe and the rapidly growing markets of Asia.
The festival allows industry leaders and fitness experts to showcase the latest innovations in the area of personal fitness.
Likely to grab the limelight is also the International Kiss Event (IKE), an underwater kissing contest first invented in Rimini in the summer of 2003. The contest will be held in a transparent, heart-shaped swimming pool, with each day's winners invited to take part in World Kissing Day, on July 10.
