Italy has won an international competition to build the launchpad and ground equipment for a new-generation European rocket. Several leading Italian aerospace companies including Vitrociset and Carlo Gavazzi Space will lead the 57-million- -euro project, which will also involve about 30 other European firms.
Italy proposed the VEGA rocket - specially suited for carrying scientific satellites - to the European Space Agency (ESA). The launchpad will be built at ESA's space station at Kourou in French Guyana. VEGA is the Italian acronym for Advanced Generation European Vector.
