Justin Gatlin

Italian Sport - July 9

Olympic champion Justin Gatlin ran his fastest 100-meter time of the season, winning the race at the Rome Golden Gala meet in 9.96 seconds Friday. "The race was good," Gatlin said. "I used 80 percent of my strength. I used my technique, stayed relaxed in the second half, and came through victorious."

Jamaica's Asafa Powell, who set the world record of 9.77 in Athens on June 14, pulled out of the race with a lingering groin injury. "I hope he gets well very soon, because I want another showdown," Gatlin said.

Last month, Gatlin became the first man in 20 years to win both the 100 and 200 at the U.S. trials.

The next Golden League meeting is the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway, on July 29.
