The Italian Army was called in on Sunday to reach snowbound villages in the central region of Ancona. Other units were mobilized in Apulia, in Italy's heel, and in Sicily, the military announced.
The rail line between Rome and Ancona, which links Italy's east and west coasts through the Apennine Mountains was blocked for several hours during the weekend. Snowstorms have cut electricity to some towns for several days.
Italy's highway authority allowed traffic to resume in northbound lanes of the Autostrada between Lagonegro and Sibari. The highway, which stretches 300 kilometers, or 190 miles, links Salerno, near Naples, with Reggio Calabria.
